What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits. Related technologies — local storage, session storage and similar mechanisms — work differently but serve comparable purposes, and this policy covers them too.
What this site currently uses
None. Browsing this library, searching the catalogue, applying filters and building comparisons all work without storing anything on your device. Your selections travel in the address of the page you are viewing, which is also why a comparison can be bookmarked or sent to someone else.
Why there is no cookie banner
Consent banners exist because sites place non-essential cookies. Since this one places no cookies at all, there is nothing to consent to. If that changes, a proper consent mechanism will appear before any non-essential storage is used, and this page will be updated first.

Things that are not cookies
Two mechanisms are worth naming because they are sometimes confused with tracking.
- Server records. The server that delivers this site logs requests for security and diagnostics. That happens at the network level and does not involve storing anything on your device. Our privacy policy covers it.
- Browser caching. Your browser saves copies of style and image files so that pages load faster on later visits. This is a standard browser function, contains no information about you, and can be cleared at any time from your browser settings.
How to control cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either for all sites or for particular ones. The controls are usually found under settings for privacy, security or site data. Blocking cookies will not affect anything on this site, but it may break sites that depend on them.

Pages here link to conservation organisations, research bodies and assessment databases. Those sites set their own cookies under their own policies. This policy stops at the edge of this site.
Changes
If measurement or advertising services are introduced in future, this page will list each cookie, its purpose and its lifetime before those services go live, and a consent mechanism will be provided where the law requires one.
