How to report an error
Write to corrections@thongkelode.com or use the contact form and choose "a correction to a page". The more of the following you can include, the faster we can act.
- The address of the page.
- The specific statement or figure you believe is wrong.
- What it should say instead.
- A source we can check, ideally an assessment, published study or institutional profile.
What happens next
- Acknowledgement — we confirm receipt, normally within five working days.
- Verification — an editor who did not write the page checks the claim against the sources.
- Decision — the page is corrected, clarified, or left unchanged with an explanation sent to you.
- Record — the change is applied and the page's review date is updated.
How different problems are handled
Factual errors
A wrong measurement, an incorrect Red List category, a misstated range or a misattributed behaviour is corrected as soon as it is verified. Where the error changed the meaning of the page, a note is added to the page recording what was changed and when.
Outdated information
When a new assessment is published or a taxonomic change is accepted, the affected profiles are updated and re-dated. This is treated as routine maintenance rather than as a correction, because the earlier version was accurate at the time it was written.
Unclear wording
If a sentence is technically accurate but reads as though it says something else, we rewrite it. A statement that misleads is a problem whether or not it is defensible on a close reading.
Typographical and formatting errors
Corrected without a published note, unless the error affected a number or a name.
What we will not change
We do not remove accurate, sourced information because a reader disagrees with it, and we do not add material that we cannot attribute. We do not publish claims about hypothetical encounters between species, and we do not adjust the framing of a conservation status to make it sound better or worse than the assessment supports.
If we cannot resolve it
Occasionally the published literature genuinely disagrees with itself. When that happens we do not pick a side silently: the page is amended to present the range of published positions and to say that the question is unsettled.
Credit
Where a reader identifies a substantive error, we are glad to credit them in the correction note if they would like that. Say so in your message; the default is not to name anyone.
Scheduled review
Independently of reported errors, every page is reviewed at least once a year. The date of the most recent review appears at the foot of each species profile and comparison, and a site-wide review date appears in the footer of every page.
