Leopard vs Cheetah
Two African cats that share the same plains and take similar prey, but that solve the problem of catching it in opposite ways.

Anatomy follows strategy
The cheetah is a sprinter first and a cat second. Its spine flexes to lengthen the stride, its claws stay partly extended for traction, its nasal passages are enlarged, and its skeleton is light. The leopard is built for power at close range: heavy shoulders, a robust skull and fully retractable claws that stay sharp for climbing and holding.
Those choices carry costs. A cheetah that is injured cannot hunt, so it avoids risk and abandons kills readily. A leopard can afford confrontation, which is one reason it persists in landscapes where cheetahs disappear.
Hunting windows
Cheetahs hunt in daylight, particularly in the hours after sunrise and before sunset. That is not a preference for heat: it separates them in time from lions, leopards and hyaenas, which are most active at night and which routinely steal cheetah kills.
Leopards do the opposite, hunting mostly at night and caching food where competitors cannot reach it. The result is two species using the same prey base without competing directly for it.
What the measurements show
Recorded top speeds separate the two clearly, with GPS-collar work on wild cheetahs producing the highest reliable figures obtained for any land mammal. Body-mass ranges, by contrast, overlap: a large leopard outweighs almost any cheetah, but a small leopard and a large cheetah are close.
What to take away
- Cheetah anatomy trades strength for acceleration; leopard anatomy does the reverse.
- Daylight hunting helps cheetahs avoid the larger nocturnal carnivores that steal their kills.

From equatorial rainforest to the fringes of the Arabian and Kalahari deserts, and from sea level to above 15,000 feet in the Himalaya. Leopards persist in farmland and near cities where cover and small prey remain.
